Scent Pod - by Smell Art

Installation: May 4th , 12pm - 8pm
May 19th, 12pm - 8pm
Metro West, 47 Paisley Street, Footscray

“Scent Pod” is an immersive art installation that invites you to engage your sense of smell. Crafted by local artist Erin Adams of Smell Art, "Scent Pod" showcases handmade giant origami seed pods that release the refreshing scent of lemon-scented eucalyptus, distilled from trees right here in Footscray.

Erin's passion for olfactory art stems from her belief in the profound impact of our sense of smell on our perception of the world. She aims to raise awareness of how scent can deepen connections, evoke emotions, and enhance our understanding of community. Through "Scent Pod," Erin aims to spark conversations about the power of scent in shaping our experiences and memories.

Additionally, each scent pod is a testament to Erin's lifelong love for origami - they are based on an elegant design from the Japanese origami expert Jun Mitani. The careful folding and intricate details of these pods reflect Erin's dedication to her craft and her desire to create a multi-sensory experience for viewers.

The scent used is sourced from lemon-scented gum (corymbia citriodora) trees found in Footscray. After a storm, fallen leaves were collected and distilled in a traditional copper alembic still, in collaboration with Eva Reid of The Leafsmith. The resulting hydrosol and essential oil capture the essence of the local landscape, infusing the installation with a fresh, energising aroma that uplifts the senses.

Beyond its aromatic allure, the scent of lemon-scented gum carries symbolic significance, representing the interconnectedness of nature and community. As visitors explore "Scent Pod," they are invited to immerse themselves in this evocative blend of art, nature, and culture, celebrating the unique spirit of Footscray.

Join us in experiencing "Scent Pod," where art and scent converge to create a truly unforgettable sensory experience.
