Astra Choir: Moveable Feast

Sun May 19th, 4:30pm - 6:30pm
Multiple Locations: Metro West 138-142 Nicholson Street,
Footscray, VIC 3011 and Footscray Baptist Church, 60 Paisley St, Footscray

The Astra Choir creates a special mobile concert for the Sleepless Footscray Festival on Sunday May 19. A choral kaleidoscope, from the Middle Ages to contemporary Australia, takes listeners through contrasting surroundings – Metro West mall and the nearby Baptist Church.

Sunday May 19 is known as Pentecost or Whitsunday, celebrating a biblical event when people spoke in many tongues, yet understood each other. The Astra Choir is also multi-lingual in this concert, crisscrossing between secular and sacred domains, like its two concert environments. The world is one, and the world is diverse!

Starting in the deserted expanse of Metro West, chants, meditations and pilgrim processions mix with modern choruses through the afternoon, including world premieres by Kym Alexandra Dillon (I DWELL IN POSSIBILITY) and choral-electronic composer Troy Rainbow.

The Astra Choir conducted by John McCaughey combines with saxophone, bells, percussion and 1940s organ of the Baptist Church.
